Physical Education

Course Outline

Studying A-Level Physical Education will seek to build on the key concepts of anatomy and physiology, health and well-being, sports psychology and socio-cultural studies learned at GCSE PE.

Physical Education is studied through a range of different contexts.  You will learn the reasons why we do things and why some people outperform others, mentally and physically.  You will also delve into the ethical considerations behind the use of drugs and the influence that modern technology is having in and on physical activity and sport.

Alongside the theoretical components, students are assessed as a performer in one sport of their choice.  This element accounts for 15% of the overall grade and is carried out by students outside of curriculum time.  Students are responsible for filming and editing footage of their performance in multiple competitive situations throughout the course and submitting it for assessment.  Consistent practical performance outside of school is a non-negotiable requirement of the course.

Exam Board: OCR

Entry Requirements

Grade 5 GCSE PE.

A strong commitment to extra-curricular sport is a necessity, with students required to take part in regular sport at club level as a minimum.

Progression Opportunities

A-Level Physical Education is an excellent base for a university degree in sports science, sports management, healthcare, or exercise and health.  Physical Education can also complement further study in biology, human

biology, physics, psychology, nutrition, sociology and many more. A-Level Physical Education can open up a range of career opportunities, including sports development, sports coaching, physiotherapy, personal training or becoming one of the next generation of PE teachers.  The transferable skills you learn through your study of Physical Education, such as decision-making and independent thinking, are also useful in any career path you choose to take.
