Appleby Grammar School

A modern school, with traditional values

ASDAN

ASDAN has been successfully used to meet the individual learning needs of many students over a number of years.  Appleby Grammar School is a registered ASDAN centre and runs a variety of courses and qualifications to enhance the attainment of students across the curriculum.  Programmes can be selected as an option by students in Year 10 and 11 as a vocational alternative to GCSE qualifications.

Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (COPE):

Can be studied at level 1 or level 2 and has been proven to improve the level of English of students studying the modules.  This is an evidence based course covering a range of different modules which enables students to research, present and report on subjects that are relevant to them.  Modules include: Information Handling, The Community, Independent Living, Sport & Leisure, Environment and Work Related Learning/Enterprise

Wider Key Skills:

Within ASDAN students have also had the opportunity to work towards Wider Key Skills at level 1 and 2.  The key skills are Working with Others, Problem Solving and Improving Own Learning.  To achieve the qualification students are asked to plan, do and review specific projects working individually or as part of a group.  This helps them to improve all aspects of learning across the curriculum.

Diploma in Life Skills:

A portfolio based course that allows students to build up knowledge of the world outside of the classroom whilst developing their own personal learning skills.  Developing Self, Preparation for Work, Managing Money, Parenting Awareness and Working with Others are a small selection of the many modules that students can study.

ASDAN Bronze/Silver Award Scheme:

Again students will develop a portfolio of work rather than be assessed through an examination.  Modules studied will include Information Handling, Expressive Arts and Environment and students complete challenges to gain 6 or 12 credits.  Students passing the Bronze course can progress on to the Silver Awards programme to raise their achievement.

Foodwise   Short Course

A portfolio based course to provide an opportunity for students to develop knowledge and skills in food preparation and cooking and how to use them effectively. The credits gained can be transferred to the Cope qualification. Modules include Healthy Eating, Basic Food Safety and Practical Cooking Skills.
